Your privacy is important to us!
The privacy of our patients is important to us. We will always respect your privacy. MyTurn Rehabilitation is bound by the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 and works following the Code of Conduct of the Australian Physiotherapy Association.
This document provides you with a summary of how we collect, store and use your health information. It reflects our own “Privacy and Managing Health information Policy” which is informed by the Privacy Act, the Guide to Health Privacy 2019, the Australian Physiotherapy Association Practice standards and the Australian Commission for Quality and Safety in Healthcare (ACSQH) standards for community Health Services.
For us to provide you with the best possible care, it is important that you trust and share with us all the necessary information to enable us to diagnose and best treat you. MyTurn Rehabilitation takes great care to ensure that our information records are correct and are treated with full regard to the privacy of our patients. We are pleased to discuss our procedures with you, and to amend any inaccuracies.
What information do we need to collect?
MyTurn collects information that is necessary for good health care. This includes your basic demographic details, your contact details and those of your carers and emergency contacts. We collect information about your condition for which you are seeing us, as well as other medical conditions that may be expected to have an impact on health service delivery. The information we hold may be shown only to persons involved in your treatment within our service as needed for your healthcare. We aim to ensure any information we hold is accurate, complete and up-to-date.
Where do we store your information?
Your Health Information may be stored in our Practice Management System, within Data Storage Devices, in paper / hard copy documents, on email servers, and in Applications that function within therapeutic technology devices.
We ensure that all data storage systems are compliant with the Privacy Act and have IT security and confidentiality systems in place to prevent loss or corruption of your health information. Where your health information is stored on cloud based storage, we ensure that it remains within Australia and subject to Australian laws and standards.
Our health records are kept in a secure location for staff access only. Security measures include restricted access, clauses in employee agreements requiring confidentiality, document shredding protocols and electronic security.
Any external contractors who work for MyTurn are also bound by the Privacy Act, as well as contractual obligations to confidentiality.
When do we release your health information?
This occurs when we need to share your health information when communicating with other health care providers who take part in your health care. As close communication with your health care team is essential for the best outcomes, we request your permission to do this when you start your journey with MyTurn. MyTurn staff will always seek your further consent where before discussing information about your health with any new providers involved in your care.
MyTurn may need to release information to insurers and compensation boards in order to meet their requirements for billing. MyTurn will obtain your consent for this to occur. You can choose to direct us to withhold information, however this may however have an adverse impact on your insurance claim.
In rare and specific legal circumstances, MyTurn may be obliged by a regulatory authority or court proceedings to release your health information. In these circumstances, MyTurn will inform you of what information has been released and who the information has been released to, unless we are prevented from doing so by the law.
What else might we do with your health information?
MyTurn staff may be involved in research on health issues. In these circumstances health information would need to be shared with organisations outside of MyTurn Rehabilitation. Research protocols do require strict privacy and health information security protocols governed by University or Health Regulatory Bodies. Where we look to use your health information, we will seek specific consent from you first ,and the information will then be de-identified prior to use.
Health information may also be used for quality assurance or clinical audit activities, which help improve the treatment and service we provide. These activities are internal and do not require information to be shared outside of MyTurn Rehabilitation. Data used for this purpose is de-identified wherever possible, to protect the privacy of our patients.

What happens if your health information is released by accident?
MyTurn takes our responsibilities regarding data security and privacy seriously and complies with regulatory and quality health care standards. We have policies and procedures in place to minimise the risk of inappropriate access and use of patient health information. If we become aware of a breech of our patient records and privacy systems, we will notify you and keep you updated of our investigations into the incident.
